What is a Fossil Really

Normally we define fossil as preserved remains or traces of animals or plants that lived in the geologic past. It is originated from the term   fossilis; literally meaning “obtained by digging”. But today in my class we were discussing fossil Landforms. The use of the term amused us and so done some research and found different usage of the term .Not only landform but a person can also be a Fossil!!! And behold fossils are found in language also.

According to dictionary.com

Any remains, impression, or trace of a living thing of a former geologic age, as a skeleton, footprint,etc.

OR

a markedly outdated or old-fashioned person or thing.

OR

a linguistic form that is archaic except in certain restricted contexts, as nonce in for the nonce, or that follows a rule or pattern that is no longer productive, as the sentence So be it.
