Some Advantages and Disadvantages of Smart Cities

Effective decision-making based on data.

Higher data availability helps us make better decisions. Digital Twin Models are an effective way to do this. A digital twin is a virtual replica or representation of a physical object, system, or process. In urban planning, a digital twin replicates an entire city or specific elements, such as buildings, infrastructure, transportation systems, and utilities.

Creation of safer communities.

Safety can be increased using smart city principles. Smart city technology helps to manage Urban Public Spaces and to keep them Democratic..Democratic public space involves complex relationships between ownership, agency, occupation,  control, and freedom. It is also intertwined with the Concept of Social Space and Geographical Space.

Improved urban transportation

Improved Urban Transport helps attract New Business Opportunities. Smart City Initiative makes it possible.

It Help people access jobs. The pattern of Transport decides how people commute to workplace. As jobs moved to suburbs, those without access to cars—including low-income workers and people with disabilities—lose out on employment opportunities. Good public transport system plays a vital role in people’s access to work.

Transport Supports innovation, productivity and economic growth in cities and the national economy. Transportation has a broad role in shaping development and the environment. It is critical to sustained economic growth. because people want to improve their standard of living and they see  increased income as the way to achieve that goal, transportation system enhancement are in turns a means of maintaining or improving economic opportunities, quality of life and ultimately income for people in a particular region Lucas (1998)

It Helps shape greener and healthier places. Transport is crucial for the sustained economic growth and modernization of a nation.

It Helps cities attract new Business. Good transport infrastructure helps unlock new development sites for business and housing. It opens new vistas for development. Also helps to connect the dots. The synergy between the two settlements creates new commercial opportunities.

Investment in transportation infrastructure is critical to sustained economic growth. Mobility studies show that transportation is essential to economic productivity and remains competitive in the global economy.

Improving the environment through various systems.

Pollution can be managed through these technologies.Environmental aspects in a smart city include water, waste, air and transportation. Real-time sensors used for filling the level of bins benefit the collection route of trucks. Also, the Smart traffic monitoring and management reduces air pollution in a city.

Minimum wastage of resources is possible due to smart technology and the Internet of Things.

Creation of services that respond more effectively to the needs of citizens.

Due to high and real time data availability new services are created and existing services are run effectively.Datait needs to be integrated into the urban system for a smooth flow. Data integration refers to combining data from multiple sources to provide a complete, accurate, and up-to-date dataset for BI, data analysis and other applications and business processes. It includes data replication, ingestion and transformation to combine different data types into standardized formats to be stored in a target repository such as a data warehouse, data lake or data lakehouse.

Automatic and efficient management of Urban Footprint

Understanding and managing the urban footprint is crucial for sustainable urban development, as it involves balancing economic growth, environmental conservation, and the well-being of the population. Monitoring and analyzing these components help urban planners make informed decisions to create livable and resilient cities.

Optimisation of both economic and natural input costs.

Input cost is optimised through resource optimisation.

Increase of Resilience in Cities

A Resilient City is the solution to overcome such disasters a resilient city is one that has developed capacities to absorb future shocks and stresses. Such cities have advanced drainage systems that help alleviate flood warning systems and transportation infrastructure that allows citizens to evacuate, renewable energy systems that provide backup power during outages, and building design solutions that reduce the damage caused by extreme climate events. The healthcare services in these cities are equipped to respond to public health emergencies, and clean drinking water is available in the aftermath of floods.

However, despite their multiple advantages, some disadvantages are applied to smart cities.

Disadvantages

Significant capital investment in technology is required.

There is a dependence on technology service companies.

Real estate becomes more expensive as it is more challenging to build and execute.

More significant technological gaps open up between Smart Cities and other cities.

Considerable increase in electronic waste.
