The immediate need for flood relief in Chennai is apparent. It is no surprise that India’s national readiness to deal with extreme weather is seriously lacking. The country will feel more than most the impact of global warming in the coming decades which means adaptation and mitigation strategies are needed to ensure the security and safety of India’s most vulnerable. Yet this is the government that is investing in more coal-fired power plants to feed its growing energy needs rather than looking at alternative renewable sources.
