1 Response to China’s one-child Policy : A Critique

When China launched its one-child policy it was looking at ways of stopping the population from exceeding the carrying capacity of the country to maintain it. But there were lots of unintended consequences because of cultural bias (favoring boys over girls), and because of the long-term impact of an aging population. Now China wants to create a sustainable population, births replacing deaths and see two children families as the means to do that. Again, this people engineering will lead to unintended consequences. It would have been far more useful to offer education and family planning to Chinese families as government policy, but like so much in China, central planning required top-down, paternal enforcement. One day the country and its government will grow up. Let’s hope soon.
