When I was a little boy the map of the world was largely pink. Not as much pink as appears on the map in the article you shared but certainly more significant than any other colour. The British Empire of which Canada was a part was built from its ocean-faring navy and commercial fleet. But like most empires it was bound to erode and the implosion came from two world wars making imperial aspirations unsustainable. What amazes me is how such a relatively small population could assert itself over so much of the planet over a period of two centuries. How many Brits were needed to rule the Raj? Apparently less than 100,000. How many to rule from Cape Town to Cairo – about the same number.
