Agriculture and Livestock Top Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Global greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector totaled 4.69 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent in 2010 , an increase of 13 percent over 1990 emissions. Global CO2 emissions from transport totaled 6.76 billion tons that year, and emissions from electricity and heat production reached 12.48 billion tons, according to Worldwatch Institute’s Vital Signs Online service.Following are key findings:

  • Growth in agricultural production between 1990 and 2010 outpaced growth in emissions by a factor of 1.6, demonstrating increased energy efficiency in the agriculture sector.
  • Three most common gases emitted in agriculture are nitrous oxide, CO2, and methane. Methane is generally produced when organic materials—such as crops, livestock feed, or manure—decompose anaerobically .
  • Methane accounts for around 50 percent of total agricultural emissions.
  • Enteric fermentation—the digestion of organic materials by livestock—is the largest source of methane emissions and of agricultural emissions overall.
  • Carbon dioxide is released from soils when organic matter decomposes aerobically . The largest source of CO2 emissions within agriculture is the drainage and cultivation of “organic soils”—soils in wetlands, peatlands, bogs, or fens with high organic material. When these areas are drained for cultivation, organic matter within the soil decomposes at a rapid rate, releasing CO2. This process accounts for around 14 percent of total agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.

Human Rights Violation Mapped by US Based Group!!!

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is still far from reality. Individuals are tortured, abused, face unfair trials and are restricted in their freedom of expression in every part of the world. Recently, human rights abuse in Nigeria was exposed by a US-based group Human Rights Watch. Satellite images analysed by the group undermined Nigerian Army’s claim that it destroyed only 30 homes. In reality, around 2,300 homes were burned by the army.

The interactive map above, by the Fund for Peace & Foreign Policy, reveals widespread violation of human rights across the globe. The countries are coloured according to the level of violations; dark green represents least violations and dark red critical. Netherlands has reported least number of violations, whereas Myanmar/Burma has maximum number of violations.

It sis imperative to note here that record of US is also dubious in this regard.

The Acid Ocean: Arctic’s soaring CO2 leaves fish and hunters gasping for life

Henricus Peters's avatarLEARN FROM NATURE

The Arctic Ocean is absorbing carbon dioxide at a far greater rate than was previously thought, threatening fish stocks and the livelihoods of indigenous peoples, a report suggests. The Independent reports

The surface, or top 100 metres, of the ocean is now about 35 per cent more acidic than it was at the start of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, with potentially huge implications for Arctic ecosystems.

The changing chemical make-up of the seawater threatens to wipe out large numbers of herring, cod and capelin – a small fish largely used as animal feed – as well as plankton and crabs.

This could affect the livelihoods of indigenous populations that rely on fishing and hunting, for example, the Canadian Inuit, as well as reducing food for birds and larger marine mammals such as walruses.

The acidification could also put further pressure on the rapidly diminishing global…

Foreign Policy the 500 most powerful individuals on the planet

Old Boy's avatarmisebogland

Interesting list of the world’s top 500 most influential people

Is it possible to identify the 500 most powerful individuals on the planet — one in 14 million? That’s what we tried to do with the inaugural FP Power Map, our inventory of the people who control the commanding heights of the industries that run the world, from politics to high finance, media to energy, warfare to religion. Think of it as a list of all the most important other lists. Here’s how they stack up — and why (sorry, declinists!) Americans are still No. 1 in pretty much everything that matters. For now.
