GeoSpatial Experts to sell GPS-enabled Nikon camera

USA: GeoSpatial Experts, developer of the GPS-Photo Link photo mapping software, has been selected by Nikon USA to sell the new GPS-enabled COOLPIX P6000 digital camera. GeoSpatial Experts is offering the Nikon camera bundled with its GPS-Photo Link Express software in packages starting below $750.The Nikon COOLPIX P6000 is the end point-and-shoot camera sold by Nikon USA and is claimed to be the only digital camera with fully integrated GPS. The GPS is built into the body of the camera so that location coordinates of each photograph are automatically tagged to the photo without any input by the photographer. For GPS applications, the main appeal of this 13.5-megapixel camera is that it’s small enough to fit in a pocket. Business people can use the Nikon COOLPIX P6000 with GPS-Photo Link mapping software to document the location of their photos. The software uses the location data acquired by the built-in GPS receiver to display photos with maps in a printed report, in Google Earth or in a GIS such as ESRI.

Oslo sets limit on Arctic seabed, short of North Pole

Ice breaks away from a frozen coastline near the Norwegian Arctic town of Longyearbyen, April 23, 2007.Ice breaks away from a frozen coastline near the Norwegian Arctic town of Longyearbyen, April 23, 2007.

Norway became the first Arctic state to agree limits to its northern seabed, stopping short of the North Pole in a regional territorial scramble driven partly by hopes of finding oil and gas.Norway’s newly defined continental shelf covers 235,000 sq kms (90,740 sq miles), or three-quarters the size of mainland Norway, Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said.

RUSSIAN FLAG

Russia planted a flag on the seabed 4,261 meters (13,980 ft) beneath the Pole in 2007 in a symbolic claim. Denmark has also said that the Pole is Danish, because of a subsea ridge running north from Greenland toward Russia.

Under the Law of the Sea, coastal states own the seabed beyond existing 200 nautical mile zones if it is part of a continental shelf of shallower waters.

Some shelves stretch hundreds of kms before reaching the deep ocean floor, which is owned by no state. Stoere said that Norway was not gaining territory, merely defining what was its under international law.

Canadian air force to map Afghanistan

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — The Canadian air force will digitally map southern Afghanistan and especially the province of Kandahar for NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and Afghan pilots and ground troops fighting the Taliban and al-Qaida.An Aurora reconnaissance aircraft with highly sophisticated sensors and cameras is to be dispatched to the region to undertake what will be a major mapmaking project, according to Lt.-Gen. Michel Gauthier, who is responsible for all Canadian forces overseas.”The aim is to have the best situational awareness we can have,” Gauthier said in an interview during his last visit to Afghanistan before leaving his position as commander of CEFCOM (Canadian Expeditionary Force Command) next month. “This superimposes a layer to do with the physical battle space that allows us to understand the operating environment.”The state-of-the-art mapping project is to be “focused on the south and principally Kandahar and, of course, we will share it with anybody who will be operating with us,” the general said.Parts of Afghanistan have very poor maps that are old and out of date, which has sometimes been a concern for battle commanders here trying to plan operations and soldiers who use them at the tactical level.

Center for Disease Control (CDC), Taiwan has developed a GIS system to monitor and control diseases and offer information to all medical organisations and the public. Named Disease Control GIS, the system includes Condition Reporting System and Phthisis Reporting System for more agencies to record different information through GIS for research analysis and control. The goal of the system is to present disease information through electronic maps for display and manipulation. The system also includes the analysis of clustering diseases, which displays the regions and degrees of clustered infections for the work of disease prevention. A Web-based Internet search platform is also included, combining vector maps and satellite images to display more accurate map information. In addition, the platform is fast and easy to access, providing real-time disease geographic information.
