World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools(WUDAPT)

The World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT) is a global project that provides tools to create climate zone maps for cities using a standard method. It includes a database and an online portal. The database has layers of detailed information, with data collected through crowdsourcing techniques like Geo-Wiki.

The framework was introduced in a 2015 publication that highlighted problems with mapping climate and weather in urban areas. Urban spaces cover about 3% of the Earth’s land but house a large portion of the world’s population. Cities affect local climate and weather, which is evident in the urban heat island effect. The framework is based on the National Urban Database and Access Portal Tool (NUDAPT), a project by the United States Environmental Protection Agency that collected data for 33 US metropolitan areas, including building height, daytime and nighttime populations, land surface temperature, radiation, and vegetation. WUDAPT has been used to create local climate zone maps for all of Europe and to study heat waves in Guangdong, China.
