IIT Kanpur aims to develop Jugnu-2 nano satellite in 2012

 In 2012, Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) aims to develop Jugnu-2 nano satellite. According to IIT-K Director, Prof. Sanjay Govind Dhande, the institute would be working as a programme coordinator for universities which are willing to develop micro-satellite. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recommended the coordination keeping in view the expertise of the institute in successful making of the nano satellite.
In addition, the institute would be developing a solar-power unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in collaboration with Singapore University. It would be remote-controlled.
 In 2011, the institute was in the limelight due to successful launch of nano-satellite Jugnu into space from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The team Jugnu, having around 50 students and led by professor NS Vyas of mechanical engineering department, received accolades. The satellite is presently orbiting the earth and transmitting beacon signals.
SIMRAN, a software-based project developed by the institute for railways too brought laurels for IIT-K. It is capable of providing exact location of a particular train to anyone requesting information. The software also provides information like speed of the train, next stoppage etc.
This information is displayed on the computer screen as and when demanded by a passenger. The information is provided in different languages. As of now this service is available to the passengers of Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains.
