Tests have shown that water in Gwanda town’s main supply dam is contaminated with cyanide suspected to be from surrounding mines. Cyanide is used in gold processing and can cause death in humans if swallowed. Gwanda Town has been without water for nearly two weeks due to emergency water rationing following reports of contamination. Zimbabwe National Water Authority’s Umzingwane Catchment manager Engineer Tommy Rosen yesterday confirmed that traces of cyanide had been found in Gwanda’s water. “Yes, the water has been contaminated. Preliminary results have shown that there have been traces of cyanide. February 2, 2013 – EARTH – An earthquake of magnitude 6.7struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands (Santa Cruz) in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Friday. The quake was later downgraded by the USGS to a 6.3 magnitude event. The depth of the quake was 10 km (6.2 miles) and the epicenter was 68 km southwest of Lata. The quake hit at 9:16 a.m. local time on Saturday. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue any alerts on its website. This quake was underscored by an even  stronger 6.9 magnitude earthquake that just struck the Hokkaido region of East Japan on February 2nd. This is the ninth major earthquake to strike the planet in the last five days.
