The topic of “free public transport” (FPT), or better yet “zero fare public transport” (ZFPT), is one that has gotten considerable attention here in World Streets over the last several years, on the grounds that it is an extremely rich concept which is worthy of careful attention. If at first humanistic and caring glance it appears to be a great and just concept, the fact is that like much of life it is more than a little complicated. The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is working for a food secure and prosperous Africa. Its founders are from the United States. ‘Its programs develop practical solutions to significantly boost farm productivity and incomes for the poor while safeguarding the environment.’

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) is a pan African platform. It’s about ‘African driven solutions to problems in Africa and a belief in the richness of ourselves… Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.’

AGRA and AFSA have similar names but they don’t always agree with one another. Food security? Food sovereignty?
