Mysteries of Night Clouds Being Solved by NASA

Noctilucent clouds have fascinated meteorologists for years. Now, a NASA satellite has captured some mysterious shiny polar clouds 50 miles above Earth’s surface.

The first observations of these “night-shining” clouds by a satellite named “AIM” which means Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere, occurred above 70 degrees north latitude on May 25. People on the ground began seeing the clouds on June 6 over Northern Europe. AIM is the first satellite mission dedicated to the study of these unusual clouds.

These mystifying clouds are called Polar Mesospheric Clouds, or PMCs, when they are viewed from space and referred to as “night-shining” clouds or Noctilucent Clouds, when viewed by observers on Earth. The clouds form in an upper layer of the Earth’s atmosphere called the mesosphere during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer season which began in mid-May and extends through the end of August and are being seen by AIM’s instruments more frequently as the season progresses. They are also seen in the high latitudes during the summer months in the Southern Hemisphere.

On June 11, 2007 the cameras on the AIM satellite returned some of the first data documenting noctilucent clouds over the Arctic regions of Europe and North America. This new data reveals the global extent and structure of these mysterious clouds, to a degree that was previously unattainable. The photograph shows white and light blue representing noctilucent cloud structures. Black indicates areas where no data is available. New Biofuel Could Lead to 100% Clean Flights

A team of scientists at the University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) successfully tested a new biofuel based on a mixture of canola and soybean oils, and claim it may be the key to zero emission aviation.

The new super-biofuel, known as Jet Propellant-8 (JP-8) was used to launch a rocket above the Mojave Desert, where it approached the speed of sound and reached an altitude of 20,000 feet – a major leap forward in biofuel-powered flight.

Weighing A Single Atom

A diagram and real-life image (inset) of a carbon nanotube.

European researchers have built an exquisite new device that can weigh a single atom. It may ultimately allow scientists to study the progress of chemical reactions, molecule by molecule.

Carbon nanotubes are ultra-thin fibres of carbon  made from thin sheets of carbon only one atom thick – known as graphene – rolled into a tube only a few nanometres across. Even the thickest is more than a thousand times thinner than a human hair.

GIS software “Aranya” for BTC forest department

New technology will now enable forest officials of Bodoland Territorial Council to make decisions faster and handle queries better. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)has developed a customised software called “Aranya” for the BTC forest department officials. The software will assist the field managers to store global positioning system (GPS)-recorded data to help them take care of the queries related to habitat suitability analysis among others.
