What appears to be missing in New Zealand’s mix of power sources is storage as a generator. The fact that wind is not backed up by storage, but rather by thermal plants is the same weakness that other countries demonstrate. Getting off thermal coal and natural gas plants and developing the country’s geothermal potential which should be significant would help move the needle closer to net zero while providing a stabilized grid. Another innovation that the country can adopt is a larger investment in localized and distributed power generation that is separate from the grid but at the same time connected to it to either draw or feed power.
