The World is Running Out of Topsoil(link)

The world may be running out of usable topsoil, the layer that allows plants to grow. According to an article that suggest we have only about 60 remaining years of topsoil. Around 40% of the world’s agricultural soil is now classified as either degraded or seriously degraded; the latter means that 70 percent of the topsoil is gone.

Our top soil is being lost at 10 to 40 times the rate it can be replenished, and our food production systems are to blame, which epitomizes the term “unsustainable.” It takes decades or even centuries to regenerate significant levels of soil.

The site which has given us the article on topsoil degradation also takes shots at GMO (referred to as GE) as a technology. Having done considerable research on the latter subject I question the accuracy of any evidence presented by the authors. We have been destroying topsoil for centuries because of poor farming practices. Today in much of North America farmers are banking soil through advanced agricultural techniques. Climate change will prove to be the most likely cause of further soil degradation through rising sea levels causing creeping soil salinization, and prolonged droughts leading to soil dessication and erosion. And GE may prove to be an effective tool in ensuring we retain topsoil through modification to root systems so that plants bind the soil they are in so that it is not subject to erosion.
